The table is published by the Government's Department for Children, families and Schools and measures how much every school in the country has improved its pupils' performances - literally how much it has "added value" to its pupils.
The school inspection body, OFSTED, says that this Government league table is the best measure of a school's educational quality, because it shows which schools make a difference to their pupils' performances by teaching standards, as opposed to those who simply select the brightest pupils for admission.
